Founded in 2008, Gallery Tongkeun has charted an independent and pioneering path distinct from conventional commercial galleries despite its intimate scale. Having published seven authoritative volumes on African art and built an extensive collection of approximately 1,500 masterworks, the gallery has collaborated on prestigious exhibitions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea as well as leading broadcasting networks and major press outlets. Furthermore, through institutional-scale exhibitions at public museums and renowned performing arts centers—such as the Gyeonggi Museum of Art, Cheongju Museum of Art, Daegu Culture and Arts Center, Gwangju Culture and Arts Center, and Chungmu Arts Center—it has continuously broadened the horizons of cultural appreciation.
As a testament to these endeavors, works by Tanzanian artist Hendrick Lilanga are featured across nine national elementary, middle, and high school textbooks, alongside pieces by Ribi Rouamba (Burkina Faso), Joël Mpah Dooh (Cameroon), and Kibuti (Kenya) in secondary art curricula. In addition, monumental paintings by Hendrick Lilanga and Abdouna Kassa reside in the permanent collections of Asan Medical Center and The Asan Institute for Policy Studies, with significant holdings likewise embraced by institutions and enterprises worldwide, including Joël Mpah Dooh at the Cheongju Museum of Art and Hendrick Lilanga at the Daegu Culture and Arts Center. Today, contemporary African art represents a vital, ever-evolving movement that significantly enriches the artistic fabric of Korean society. With sustained vision and institutional commitment, Gallery Tongkeun remains dedicated to presenting acclaimed, thought-provoking exhibitions that bridge continents and engage diverse audiences.
